GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Agriculture officials in southern Ghazni province say two large cold storages with capacity to preserve 8000 metric tons of agricultural products will be constructed in Ghazni city, the provincial capital, this year.

Ghazni agriculture, irrigation and livestock director Maulvi Mohammad Idrees Hanif told Pajhwok hundreds of tons of dried fruits, fresh fruits and vegetables produced in Ghazni city and districts were currently provided to the market at half prices due to the absence of cold storages.

He said two businessmen would invest $1 million to build two advanced cold storages with the capacity to preserve up to 8,000 metric tons of agricultural products.

He said the local government would provide land and electricity to the cold storages.

He said farmers would preserve their harvests at the facilities and supply them to the market when needed.

The two businessmen, Haji Ishaq and Haji Ghulam Farooq, are residents of Herat province.

They say they will invest one million dollars to construct the cold storages. They also plan to establish a juice processing and packaging factory in Ghazni by investing $400,000.

Farmers say they are happy that cold storage facilities are being built to store agricultural products, especially vegetables.

A farmer in Ghazni city, Bismillah, told Pajhwok prices of agricultural products fell during their harvest and they had to incur losses every year.
