KABUL (Pajhwok): Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Mullah Baradar Akhund on Tuesday inaugurated a 10-megawatt solar power generation project in the Sorobi district of central Kabul province.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several high ranking officials, including acting Minister of Water and Energy Mullah Abdul Latif Mansoor, Baradar’s office said in a statement.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Mullah Baradar Akhund emphasized that Afghanistan was the shared home of all Afghans, representing their dignity, identity and unity.

Mullah Baradar said the Islamic Emirate was committed to serving the people.

He underscored the paramount importance of industry for a robust economy and recognized electricity as the cornerstone of industrial development.

He reaffirmed the Islamic Emirate’s dedication to prioritizing domestic electricity production and invited both local and international investors to participate in this endeavor.

“In continuation of these efforts, today marks the commencement of the 10-megawatt solar power generation project. While this project may appear modest in terms of electricity production, it holds immense significance in our journey toward self-sufficiency. It signifies our liberation from the dependency on 10 megawatts in achieving self-reliance,” he explained.

Baradar revealed the Islamic Emirate’s decision to entrust the contract for the completion of the next 500-kilovolt transmission line from Turkmenistan to the Afghan Investment Company in exchange for a mining concession. “This initiative is expected to facilitate the transfer of hundreds of megawatts of electricity to Afghanistan with annual savings to reach $200 million”.

He once again extended a fervent call to domestic and foreign investors, urging them to actively participate in the reconstruction of Afghanistan and seize the burgeoning economic opportunities taking shape.

The 10-megawatt solar power generation project, backed by the private sector and supported by the Islamic Emirate, is poised for completion within a year, requiring an investment of approximately 700 million afghanis.
