MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB) officials in the northern zone have announced that 1, 2 and 5 afghani (AFN) banknotes will enter circulation from today (Wednesday).
Zia-ur-Rahman Madani, DAB director in the northern zone, said the denominations of 1, 2 and 5 afghanis were valid and could be used in daily transactions.
He said that the previous government had withdrawn these banknotes from circulation for personal interests and now the problem had been solved.
According to Madani, currently there are about one million afghanis in the said denominations in the treasury of Da Afghanistan Bank, which will be officially distributed to banks and markets next Saturday.
Meanwhile, residents of Balkh province welcomed the decision of DAB.
All Gul, a resident of Mazar-i-Sharif city, said he was happy with this decision of the government. He said with such decisions, the value of money would increase.
Niamatullah, another resident, also made similar statements and asked citizens to cautiously use these banknotes.
Coins were used instead of these banknotes in some northern provinces, including Balkh province, for the past one decade.
