PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Afghanistan’s top diplomat in Islamabad and UNHCR’s new head in Pakistan have exchanged views on the situation of refugees in the country.
Sardar Ahmad Shakib and Philippa Candler discussed the ongoing crackdown on undocumented Afghans living in Pakistan.
At the meeting, Shakib voiced his grave concern at Pakistan’s decision on evicting Afghan migrants by November 1 and their arrests in different cities.
In a post on its its X handle, the Afghan embassy in Islamabad quoted the envoy referred to reports about Pakistan’s ultimatum for illegal aliens and their detentions.
Shakib complained the illegal Afghans in Pakistan were subjected to humiliation, harassment and mistreatment before release from prison.
Candler commended the embassy’s efforts and concerns, while acknowledging the challenges being faced by Afghan refugees in Pakistan.
At a meeting scheduled for next week in Geneva, UNHCR’s Executive Committee would address these challenges, she added.
