KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has said $14.4 million are required to meet urgent needs of earthquake survivors in western Herat province.
The refugee agency in a report released yesterday said the earthquakes had worsened the situation of newly affected people.
It said the victims mostly included returning refugees and internally displaced families who had been displaced due to the past wars.
UNHCR said 19,250 people were directly affected, 12 villages completely destroyed and 440 villages were damaged by the earthquakes.
It said 8,100 families, comprising 56,700 individuals, needed urgent assistance and should be supported.
In the last two weeks, more than 2,000 people, including children and women, lost their lives and thousands of people were injured due to repeated earthquakes in Herat.
Hundreds of houses were completely destroyed in Injil, Zinda Jan, Gulran, Ghorian and Kohsan districts.
