PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Dozens of tribal elders in northern Baghlan province at a gathering asked the acting Minister of Energy and Water to establish small check dams in the province to store water for irrigation amid drought.

Mohammad Juma, a tribal elder from Dand-i- Ghori district, told the gathering severe drought gripped the province this year and their crops parched.

He said in order to solve this problem the government should build small dams for storing water.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Shah, chief of development council of Baghlan-i-Markazi district, said their district was the most productive area, but unfortunately it lacked enough irrigation water.

He said if small check dams were established in the district, agricultural production of the district would be doubled.

Some other people made similar statements.

In response to their demand, acting Energy and Water Minister Abdul Latif Mansour sad the purpose of his trip to the province was to solve problems of the residents.

He added the government wanted to build a hydropower dam in the Kilahgi area of ​​the province and came to the province to see the area closely and consult about it.
