PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan’s deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif returned home from four years in self-exile on Saturday afternoon.
Following his disqualification and subsequent imprisonment, Sharif was allowed to go for medical treatment to the United Kingdom, where he stayed for four years in self-imposed exile.
Senior Pakistan Muslim League-N leaders, including his lawyer former law minister Azam Tara, accorded Sharif a warm welcome at the Islamabad airport.
On landing in the federal capital, the ex-premier — a proclaimed offender — was briefed on political and legal issues.
Expected to face a flurry of legal challenges, Sharif told reporters at Dubai Airport he was happy returning to his homeland, where he will spearhead the party’s election campaign.
Later in the day, he will address a public gathering at Minar-i-Pakistan in Lahore — his stronghold. The country is headed for a new general election next year.
