ZARANJ (Pajhwok): A hundred couples have tied the knot at a mass wedding ceremony in Zaranj, the capital of Nimroz province.
The ceremony was financed by the Habibyar Charity Foundation, whose representative Maulvi Abdul Haq Seddiqi told Pajhwok Afghan News that 5,000 guests, including local officials, attended Tuesday’s function.
Each newlywed couple was given 60 household appliances worth 100,000 afs by the foundation, which has previously arranged nine mass wedding ceremonies in Herat and Farah provinces, Seddiqi said.
“We planned to arrange the next ceremony, the 10th one, in Herat,” the foundation representative added.
Social worker and culturist Gen. Mobin Khan, speaking on the occasion, urged public cooperation with the needy and downtrodden individuals. He hailed the foundation’s goodwill gesture.
Information and Culture Director Mufti Habibullah Elham called for eradicating evil customs and hailed such ceremonies valuable.
On behalf of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), he asked the wealthy Afghans to support their poor compatriots in a similar manner
Prayer leader Maulvi Bashir Ahmad Khatibi also welcomed the step and asked national businessmen to fund such ceremonies.
The couples also appreciated the mass wedding ceremony, saying they could not bear the cost of marriage on their own.
