KABUL (Pajhwok): The National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA) says it has sent technical teams to Torkham and Spin Boldak to register Afghan refugees returning from Pakistan.
Earlier, the government of Pakistan had set the Nov 1 deadline for undocumented refugees to leave the country or face forcible expulsion.
According to reports, 1.4 million undocumented Afghan refugees are living in Pakistan, where a nationwide crackdown on illegal foreigners is ongoing.
Media reports indicate more than 100,000 Afghan refugees returned to their country last month, and about 20,000 others reached Torkham on Tuesday.
NSIA spokesman Mohammad Halim Rafi wrote on his X handle that a commission led by Maulvi Abdul Salam Hanafi, the deputy prime minister, was recently established to deal with the problems being faced by returning refugees.
He said NSIA had sent well-equipped teams to Torkham and Spin Boldak crossings to register the returnees regularly.
Nangarhar Refugee Department officials say all returning families are being given emergency assistance and registered with UNHCR for further aid.
As the number of returnees increased, the Nangarhar administration has built a temporary camp for them in Momand Dara district in coordination with the Refugees and Repatriation and other ministries
The refugees returning from Pakistan go to the temporary camp after being registered in Torkham and upon arrival there, they are given essential aid.
