Officials, common people daily serve food to returnees

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Government officials, businessmen, civil society activists and common people every day distribute ready to eat food among refugees who have returned from Pakistan in Torkham township in eastern Nangarhar province.

Sidiqullah Qureshi Badlon, Nangarhar Information and Culture department spokesman, told Pajhwok on Friday  the 201 Salab Military Corps, Nangarhar police and the Intelligence Department had been tasked with distributing food to the returnees from the government side.

He said many businessmen, activists and ordinary people also delivered ready to eat food to the refugees on a daily basis.

The Nangarhar Chamber of Commerce and Investment has also started providing shelter and food to the returnees.

Shakirullah Sapi, public relations officer of the chamber, said they had dispatched around 1,000 tents, food and other necessary items and clean drinking water to Torkham for distribution to the refugees there.

In Nazian district, a group of young men collect food from houses and take it to Torkham and distribute it to the returning families.

Waliullah Shinwari, a resident of the district, said he joined  the group with a national zeal to help his countrymen.

The refugees said they were happy and grateful for the love and help being extended to them after return from Pakistan.

Izatullah, who returned from Taru Jabba area of Peshawar, said he was maltreated in Pakistan, but the kind treatment of his countrymen and officials made him to forget the past.

Officials say Pakistan has forcibly expelled more than 150,000 Afghan refugees.
