JALALABAD (Pajhwok): UN humanitarian aid coordinator for Afghanistan Daniel Andres has pledged long and short-term assistance with Afghan refugees returning from Pakistan.
Daniel Andres and his colleagues, accompanied by Nangarhar governor visited temporary camps for the returnees near Torkham town.
Andres said the refugees would be provided assistance such as shelter, food, employment, healthcare, clean drinking water and education to their children.
In a statement, the Governor House said Governor Mohammad Naeem Akhund appreciated UN organizations for providing services to Afghan returnees in addition to other aid.
He briefed the UN officials services at the temporary camps and called for long-term assistance to the returning families apart from emergency aid.
He said so far 170,000 families have been registered and most of them transported to their respective provinces.
He said all the returning families needed assistance like shelter, clean water, schools, clinics and others in their provinces.
Daniel Andres thanked the governor of Nangarhar and all officials for managing the large group of returnees in a good way.
He expressed his concern that the camp was overwhelmed and more refugees would also come.
He added they would provide long and short-term assistance to the refugees like food, cash, shelter, work, healthcare, clean water and other.
United Nations World Food Program (WFP), the International Organization for Migrants (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other organizations have promised assistance and cooperation with the refugees.
