GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Fourteen development projects have been executed at a cost of 850,000 US dollars in seven different districts of southern Ghazni province, an official said on Thursday.
Governor Amin Jan Omari told the inaugural ceremony the projects had been put into service in Nawa, Deh Yak, Gilan, Maqur, Giru and Waghaz districts.
He said the projects included the construction eight check dams, two retaining walls and four canals with financial support from UNDP and Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and with technical cooperation of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC).
He added the projects had been initiated one year ago on the demand of people and 3,500 skilled and unskilled individuals were provided with job opportunities.
According to him, the workers were paid daily wages of 400 to 800 afghanis. As many as 65,000 people will directly benefit from the projects.
The governor urged residents of the districts to pay due attention to the protection of the projects.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) was trying to create facilities for the people, Omari said.
Area residents, happy over inauguration of the schemes, hoped the water level would improve with the construction of the check dams.
Mohammad Akbar, an influential figure from Nawa district, said the water level there was very low. However, he hoped the water level would rise with the construction of the check dam.
Other people, holding similar views, asked the government and aid agencies to implement such projects in their areas as well.
