HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): About 100 couples have tied the knot at a mass wedding ceremony attended by local officials, relatives of grooms and brides and hundreds of residents in western Herat province.
Governor Maulana Noor Ahmad Islam Jar, speaking on the occasion, commended the organisations supporting the less fortunate people.
“We hope that all other businessmen and investors will take similar initiatives to reach out to deserving individuals,” he added.
Maulana Naeemul Haq Haqqani, head of the media center, suggested they should promote the culture of mutual acceptance and help each other at the community level.
Maulvi Abdul Haq, a representative of Habibyar Charity Foundation, said about a hundred couples tied the knot at the ceremony that cost 10 million afghanis.
According to him, the charity was committed to supporting the needy. Every couple was given 60 types of household items, including food and non-food items.
Meanwhile, the newly-married couples thanked the charitable organisations for their support.
Hamayoon, one of the grooms, said he had been engaged for five years. But he had been unable to arrange his wedding. He thanked the foundation for arranging the mass wedding ceremony.
He urged religious scholars to educate the masses on the need for cutting the back-breaking expenses on weddings in the society.
