MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Butchers in northern Balkh province have demanded decreased in the state-run slaughterhouse where large animals slaughtering is charged 1,450 afs and small animals 350 afs.

They said the rates were very high and they faced with losses especially during inflation.

Noor Agha, one of the butchers, said earlier they paid 100 afs in a private slaughterhouse, but now they have to pay 1,450 afs for the slaughtering of a large animal.

He said butchers profit is not the extent that they could afford high slaughterhouse rates.

“We pay 1,450 afs for the slaughtering of an animal and the slaughterhouse is also away from the city, we pay 500 fare so total it cost 2,000 afs,” he said.

Noor Agha said most of the time they earn no profit but instead suffer loss.

Mohammad Amin, another butcher, expresses similar view and said besides these problems people are suffering from financial crisis and they could not afford to buy meat.

Abdul Qadir, the Butchers Union head in Balkh, said they referred to the Municipality, Governor House and other institutions but so far they received no positive response.

Attaullah Ismelkhel, in-charge of the state run Abattoir, said the rate is decided by the acting government leadership and according to the contract if the animals are slaughtered at low rate the Abattoir will suffer losses.

Balkh Municipality Spokesperson Mohibullah Haqqani, said a meeting was had been organized with butchers in this regard and a decision would be taken to address this issue.

The state run Abattoir is recently inaugurated and given to a private company on contract.
