Russia, Pakistan confer on situation in Afghanistan

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok):  Pakistan and Russia have stressed the need for combating global and regional terrorist threats.

At a meeting in Islamabad, Russian and Pakistani officials also conferred  on the current security situation in Afghanistan, Central and South Asia and North Africa.

The Foreign Office said the two sides pledged to boost bilateral cooperation in key areas to effectively combat terror financing.

At the 10th meeting of the Pakistan-Russia Joint Working Group on Combating International Terrorism, both global and regional terrorism threats came up for detailed discussion.

The dialogue highlighted the complexity of the terror landscape and the need for continued vigilance, the Foreign Office said.

“Both Pakistan and Russia agreed on the need for comprehensive strategies to counter these challenges,” added the Foreign Office.

Pakistan has specially been suffering from continuous attacks by the TTP and a joint strategy would go a long way towards addressing this massive security challenge, according to the statement.

The two sides outlined their respective strategies and measures for battling terrorism and shared their experiences and best practice.

Discussions on enhancing cooperation in multilateral forums, such as the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), were particularly fruitful, they noted.
