ATLANTA (Pajhwok): The United Nations may convene an ‘important’ meeting regarding Afghanistan in Qatar next month.
The world’s body had in May hosted a closed-door summit on Afghanistan in Qatar without any formal acknowledgment of the Islamic Emirate-run government.
The United Nations’ chief had said they would hold another meeting in the future.
The previous meeting was attended by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the huddle was aimed at reaching unified stances on human rights, governance, counterterrorism and anti-drug efforts related to Afghanistan.
UN chief spokesman Stéphane Dujarric told a press conference in New York that the meeting might be held in Qatar in December, but stopped short of giving details.
Meanwhile, Zalmay Khalilzad, former US special representative for Afghanistan, revealed some details about the UN meeting in Qatar during an interview with Voice of America.
He said the UN was going to hold an important meeting on Afghanistan in the next few days.
He added UN special coordinator for Afghanistan Feridun Sinirlioğlu on directives of Guterres had met officials of several countries and Afghans and then submitted a comprehensive report to the UN Security Council .
He said the UN chief had read the report and some decisions would be taken in the meeting in light of the report.
He said the report had recommendations about the future of Afghanistan, which would be beneficial to Afghans and Afghanistan.
Last week, Russia’s special representative for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov said the UN would hold a meeting in near future and it would be attended by special representatives of several countries.
He added Sinirlioğlu had prepared a report and presented it to special representatives. “We are in the process of making many international plans for Afghanistan,” Kabulov said, but did not comment on topics to be discussed at the new meeting of the special representatives.
