World no longer wants to back warlords: Potzel

CHARIKAR (Pajhwok): UNAMA deputy head Markus Potzel says the world is tired of war and does not want to support or finance warlords any longer.

Potzel made the remarks at a meeting with the Panjsher governor and other local officials during his visit to the province.

A statement from the governor’s office said that Fiona Frazer, UNAMA’s human rights chief, and other officials were part of the UNAMA delegation.

At the meeting with Governor Hafiz Mohammad Agha Hakim, Potzel expressed his displeasure with the warlords who impeded the delivery of global aid and took poor people hostage.

He added the world was tired of war and no longer wanted to support or finance warlords. The United Nations would not justify the actions of of such warlords or groups.

Potzel praised efforts by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) for combating narcotics and ensuring security in the country.

Drug cultivation, production and trafficking in Afghanistan had fallen to the lowest level, the UNAMA official acknowledged.

Referring to the existing security situation, Potzel said his trip to Panjsher had proved the restoration of security in Afghanistan.

For his part, the governor said they would not allow anyone to stoke the flames of conflict in the country.

In addition to recent economic stability in the province, he also referred to the services rendered for the welfare of the people after IEA’s takeover.

He added: "Dictatorship  has been eradicated and the people of Panjsher have access to their rights, security has come and thousands of youth have been given employment opportunities in government institutions.”

The governor recalled the people of Panjsher had been deprived in the past of their rights and including the right to trade. But now they enjoy all rights and live a peaceful life. They have been freed from the tyranny of powerful individuals.”

Potzel said: "We closely watched the security and social situation in Panjsher. UNAMA is trying to serve as a bridge between the world and IEA and paint the real picture of Afghanistan.”
