JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The central bank has torched old notes worth more than 118 million afghanis in the presence of senior officials in eastern Nangarhar province.

Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB) said in a statement the worn-out notes had been set on fire under Articles 39 and 42 of the DAB Law in the presence of a high-level delegation.

Noor Ahmad Agha, first deputy head of the central bank, led a delegation to Nangarhar to burn the old banknotes, the statement added.

Agha asked the citizens to use the local currency in commercial transactions. He called the protection of banknotes a national responsibility.

Earlier, the central bank had torched old banknotes worth millions of afghanis in southern Kandahar and western Herat provinces.
