KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has asked the international community to invest in the treatment of diabetes patients in Afghanistan.
The MoPH organized a gathering marking 14 November, the World Diabetes Day. The gathering was attended by a number of physicians and officials of the ministry.
Habibullah Akhundzada, deputy health minister, said the World Health Organisation’s statistics showed that 17,499 people have been affected by diabetes and over 10,000 have died from this illness in 2022.
He did not provide information had how many people are currently affected by diabetes but asked the international organization to invest in the diabetes patients’ treatment in Afghanistan.
Haider Khan Haidar, head of the General Diseases Control and Prevention Department, said that prevention is better than control and most awareness related programmes should be conducted through media platforms.
Most physicians are worried about the shortage of insulin and asked the government ensure the availability of insulin.
Hasibullah Mohammadi, head of the Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan’s Diabetes Department, said they were faced with the shortage of insulin and recently the death toll of diabetes patients had increased due to insulin shortage.
Naeemullah Safi, the representative of WHO, said they will continue their support to the health sector of Afghanistan.
He advised that people should eat healthy food in order to protect themselves from diabetes.
He said 537 million people are infected with diabetes worldwide in which 73 million are in Middle East and North Africa.
