JALALABAD (Pajhwok): This year 1,400 tonnes of peanuts yield produced in eastern Nangarhar province showing three times surge comparing to the last year production, an official said on Wednesday.
Ajmal Subhani, the Agriculture Department spokesperson, told Pajhwok Afghan News this year peanuts cultivated on 627,000 hectares land in 11 districts.
“Behsud, Haskamena, Kuz Kunar, Batikot, Spinghar, Sra Rud, Khogyani, pachiragam, Chaparhar, Sherzad and Hisarak are the district where peanuts produce good result and this year the crop was cultivated on large scale in these areas.”
He said this year 1,400 tonnes of peanuts yield produced while last year peanuts production stood at 516 tonnes.
Suhbani said last year peanuts were cultivated on 240 hectares of land, it produced decent yield and farmers earned good income therefore majority farmers this year decided to cultivate peanuts.
Although the farmers are happy with this year's peanuts yield but they demand that if the government support in the areas of water provision, chemical fertilizers, refined seeds and marketing.
Sayed Agha, a farmer from the Lalmi village of Nangarhar, who cultivated peanuts on his land and was now busy harvesting the crops, said despite the shortage of water in this area the peanuts production was still better.
“We need government support in the provision of chemical, irrigation system and provision of refined seeds,” he said.
Erfanullah, the resident of Mamli locality in Khogyani district, said last year he earned decent income from peanuts therefore he cultivated it this year as well and recovered good yield from the crop.
