PARAKH (Pajhwok): More than 4794 carats of emerald stones were sold at an auction in central Panjsher province for about 319,000 US dollars.
Panjsher Information and Culture Department quoted provincial mines director Abdul Qasim Amiri as saying the auction of emeralds was held today in the presence of local officials.
He said 4794.7 carats of emerald were sold for 318900 US dollars.
Speaking on the occasion, Panjsher governor Mohammad Agha Hakim said efforts were being made to extract emerald stones in a standard way in coordination with the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum and international private companies.
Extraction work at emerald mines in Panjshir resumed after a pause lasting about two years and it was seventh time that emeralds were auctioned since then.
About 700 emerald deposits exist in Panjsher and most of these mines are located in Hessa Awl district.
Panjsher’s emerald having a bright green color is famous worldwide and is considered one of the most precious and valuable gemstone in the world.
