MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): Construction word on a 500-metre long retaining wall, costing155,000 US dollars, has been launched in Qarghayee district of eastern Laghman province, an official said on Wednesday.
Governor Qari Zain-ul-Abideen Abid told Pajhwok Afghan News the Japan-funded retaining wall was being built in the Hussainabad area of the district.
He hoped the project being executed in the Daronta dam basin, when completed, would save thousands of acres of land from floods.
Malik Hijratullah, a tribal elder from the area, said: "Every year, hundreds of acres of our agricultural land are destroyed by the river. I am glad that the government has started the construction of the retaining wall."
He added thousands of acres of land in the area were still under threat of being washed away by the river. The government and charitable institutions should build more retaining walls in the area.
