TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Drivers and passengers have demanded the ongoing reconstruction work on the Kandahar-Uruzgan highway be expedited, but officials assure its early completion.

Reconstruction work on the Kandahar-Uruzgan highway was launched three months ago and the officials at that time had said that it would take three months to complete.

However, the work has not been completed yet and some passengers and drivers who travel on this highway want the government to speed up the reconstruction work.

Ahmadullah, a driver, told Pajhwok Afghan News if the reconstruction work was not completed soon, passengers would face many problems this winter.

He added: “The whole route takes two hours, but now due to its reconstruction, it takes four hours for a passenger to reach his destination.”

Ismatullah, a commuter on the highway, made similar statements and asked the authorities to speed up efforts at completing the reconstruction work.

According to him, the stipulated period has ended, but the reconstruction is yet to be completed.

Maulvi Adamjan Nomani, Uruzgan public works director, said he had asked and advised officials of the relevant company to speed up the reconstruction work.

He said the reconstruction work will be completed soon.

A 40km portion of the 175km long Uruzgan-Kandahar highway is unpaved, 125km has been constructed on standard manner, but during the recent wars, some parts and culverts have been damaged and their reconstruction is underway.
