FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): The Information and Culture Department of northeastern Badakhshan province has identified and registered 18 more heritage sites this year.
Mohammad Arif Farooqi, head of culture and art at the department, told Pajhwok Afghan News that a technical team the department visited Badakhshan’s districts this year.
According to him, areas identified as heritage sites include the tomb of Mir Ghiyasuddin Ghiyasi in Juram district, Abdul Rashid Sufi mosque in Khash district, Abdul Rahman Ibn Aawf grave in Ashkashim, grave of Khwaja Hamiduddin Zariri, martyrs caravanserai in Qala-i-Kohna of Kashim district.
These sites, which have a history of hundreds of years, have been registered with the Ministry of Information and Culture.
Farooqi also said 11 ancient sites in Askashim, Wardoj, Juram, Khas, Tagab, Shohada and Zebak districts had been registered with the MoIC.
He said: “Badakhshan is one of the richest provinces in terms of ancient and historical sites and we are obliged to preserve them.”
He added that 21 historical and 10 ancient sites had been identified and registered in the past years, some of them have been damaged due to insecurity in the past, but they have been able to restore them after the political change.
