KABUL (Pajhwok): About 120 journalists and media workers, including 11 women, were killed around the world, in 2023, says the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
This year, 68% of the journalists and media workers who lost their lives worldwide were killed in the Gaza conflict, the federation said.
In the Middle East, 75 Palestinian, four Israeli and three Lebanese journalists were killed as a result of the war in Gaza. Three media workers were killed in Syria.
A dozen journalists were killed in the Asia-Pacific, three in India two each in Afghanistan, the Philippines, Bangladesh and Pakistan and one in China.
In North and South America, 10 journalists were killed in 2023 — three Mexicans, one Paraguayan, three Guatemalan, one Colombian, one Honduran and one American.
In Africa, the IFJ deplored eight murders — two in Cameroon and one each in Sudan, Lesotho, Mali, Somalia, Mozambique ,Nigeria and Rwanda.
In Europe, three journalists and media workers were killed, one Ukrainian, one Russian and one French. They were killed in the Ukraine war and one media worker was put to death in Albania
The IFJ urged governments to swiftly adopt an international binding convention ensuring journalists’ safety and independence.
