ACB retains Trott as head coach through 2024

ATLANTA (Pajhwok): The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has extended Jonathan Trott’s contract as head coach of the national team for 2024, following his successful 18-month tenure.

Trott, a South African-born former English cricketer, was appointed in July 2022 and has since led the team to several notable achievements, ACB said in a statement.

These achievements include a strong showing at the ACC T20 Men’s Asia Cup 2022, a historic T20 International series win against Pakistan, a One Day International series victory over Bangladesh, and a successful campaign in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

During his career with England from 2009 to 2015, Trott played 52 Test matches, scoring 3,835 runs at an average of 44.08, including nine centuries and 19 half-centuries.

He also represented England in 68 ODIs, scoring 2,838 runs at an average of 51.25 with four hundreds and 22 half-centuries.

Trott expressed enthusiasm about the extension, looking forward to further improving the team’s performance, building on their recent World Cup campaign.

The Afghanistan squad is currently in the United Arab Emirates for a three-match T20I series. They are scheduled for a three-match T20I series in India from Jan, 11 to 17.

The year ahead is packed with bilateral tours, including participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, set for June in the Caribbean and the US.
