JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The Canal Department and a private agricultural company have established a facility to produce and reproduce improved quality seeds of vegetables in eastern Nangarhar province.

The modified seeds would be distributed to farmers across the country.

Hilal Group Company has invested in the modified seeds production facility in Khewa district on 50 acres of land.

Canal Department spokesman Sayed Humayun Gharibmal told Pajhwok Afghan News today (January 7) the pilot farm and facility was created in Abdul Khel village of Khewa district.

The improved quality seeds would be distributed to farmers in all provinces in order to prevent the import of low quality seeds.

An official of Hilal Group Shah Wali Hadawal said modified seeds would be produced within the country now.

The Hilal Group Company will try to produce modified seeds according to the need of farmers, he added.

An official of agriculture section of Hilal Group Abdul Wali said that the company will initiate production of vegetable seeds commonly grown in eastern parts of the country.

Right now the company will produce the seeds of okra, tomatoes, beans, eggplants, pepper, onions and some other vegetables.

Nangarhar farmers have cultivated modified wheat seed on over 3,700 acres of land, which will help them economically and mechanize domestic agricultural sector.
