KABUL (Pajhwok): The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has said that the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) human rights report indicated the ignorance and unawareness of the organization about Islamic and Sharia rules, according to a statement on Monday.

The UNAMA report said that the de facto authorities continued to enforce and promulgate restrictions on women’s rights to work, education and freedom of movement.

In particular, the de facto Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, and its respective departments at provincial level, take on this enforcement role with regards to hijab, mahram and other requirements imposed on women by visiting public places, offices and educational institutes, as well as establishing checkpoints, and monitoring compliance.

For example, on 26 December in Kandahar, de facto Department of Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice officials visited a bus terminal to ensure that women were not travelling long distances without mahrams and instructed bus drivers that they were not to permit women to board without a mahram.

“Women’s hijab, the necessity of Sharia mahram with women, Sharia environment for women’s work and education, as well as the implementation of Sharia punishments by the courts, prevention of intellectual and religious deviations in society, these are all the commitments and responsibilities of a responsive and Islamic government,” the statement said.

If UNAMA criticized the mentioned cases or called the Islamic rules an act against human rights, then it was obviuosly an insult to people’s beliefs.

The Islamic Emirate advises UNAMA not to unnecessarily criticize the religious issues of the people of Afghanistan.

“Every step that is taken by the Ministry of Vice and Virtue, Courts or other relevant bodies is as per the order of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Emirate, which has strong Sharia and legal basis and is done after thorough and deep research.”

“It is not arbitrary and does not violate anyone’s rights, however, the abandonment of Islamic rules will definitely lead to oppression, violence, corruption and conflict in the society.”
