KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): A businessman in northern Kundz province has generated work opportunities for 500 people through the cultivation of Asafoetida on 350 acres land, an official said on Thursday.
Salahuddin Wahidi, deputy head of the Agriculture Department, told Pajhwok Afghan News this businessman invested in the cultivation of Asafoetida on the 350 acres rain-fed deserts of Aliabad district. the harvested yield will be exported to India, China, Pakistan, Iran and other countries.
He said: “The Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock of Kunduz is working hard in the development of the agricultural sector, Asafoedtida also known as Heng has good profit compared to other agricultural products, and therefore more people have started cultivating this plant, we are trying to expand the market of this medicinal plant.”
He said this businessman helped generate work opportunity to 500 people through investing in this project.
He said lately investing in this sector had increased and it could be counted as best alternative for poppy crop.
Fawad Hazratzada, a businessman who invested in this sector, said they tried to expand the cultivation of Heng.
He asked the government to promote export of goods to foreign countries particularly to Europe and US.
Jawad one of the workers said: “I was unemployed, there were many problems in my life, now I am working here, I am very happy, our wish is that our other brothers who are well-off should invest in the country.”
Abdul Karim, another worker, said: “When we were unemployed, not even a day would pass, now we come at eight o’clock and work until dinner, I earn livelihood through this way for my children.”
Asafoetida is one of the agriculture products that became famous lately in Afghanistan particularly in Kunduz province.
This natural herb is used in the making of medicine, in the past, it was sold at a huge price, but with the passage of time the price of this medicinal plant has decreased.
