GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Estimated to cost 80 million afghanis, construction work has been launched on 20 large check dams in southern Ghazni province, an official said on Monday.

Mohammad Nazir Sahar, an official of the Ghazni river basin authority, told Pajhwok Afghan News the check dams were being constructed with financial support of the Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW) and some aid giving organizations.

He said these check dams were being constructed in Andar, Nawa, Jaghto districts and the provincial capital with financial support of the Danish Refugee Committee (DRC). He added the purpose of the dams was to manage rain and floodwater.

At the same time, residents hoped the dams would resolve water scarcity issue and drought.

More than 80 percent of Ghazni residents are associated with agriculture and livestock and they often complain about lack of water.
