JALALAAD (Pajhwok): The Canal Department in eastern Nangarhar province says the private sector has built a large chicken raising and production farm by investing 1.7 million dollars.
The farm has the capacity to raise 30,000 chickens at once and offer up to 600,000 chickens monthly to the market.
Inaugurating the farm, Nangarhar Canal Department director Maulvi Ghulam Rahman Kazim said the farm would increase domestic production of eggs and meat.
He said an investor had spent 1.7 million dollars on the farm where 30,000 chickens could be kept at one time.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Maulvi Sadr Azim Osmani said that Afghanistan was on the path to achieving self-sufficiency in eggs and poultry.
According to him, currently more than 10,000 large and small poultry farms exist in the country that produce a large number of chickens and eggs every day.
Azizullah Hussam, the farm’s investor, said they had named the farm after Habib Hussam. He said nearly 450 people were employed in the farm.
He urged the government to increase customs duty on the import of poultry and chicken meat so that the domestic production could be supported.
