LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Electricity from the Kajaki hydropower dam has been reconnected to southern Helmand and Kandahar provinces after one and a half months, an official said on Wednesday.
Helmand Governor’s spokesman Maulvi Mohammad Qasim Riaz told Pajhwok Afghan News the Kajaki hydropower plant ceased producing power for one and a half months due to lack of water in the reservoir.
However, the dam resumed operation today (Wednesday) and its electricity was reconnected to four districts of Helmand and Kandahar province.
He said currently the dam has capacity to generate 35 megawatts of electricity and according to a special schedule, 18MW would be given to Kandahar, nine to Lashkargah city and the remaining eight to Greshk, Kajaki and Sangin districts.
He added the water level in the dam might change the schedule of electricity distribution.
The newly reconnected electricity will also be given to factories and residential areas in Helmand.
The Kajaki hydropower dam has six turbines and has the capacity to generate 150MW power, but currently only two turbines are functioning.
Residents of Helmand and neighbouring Kandahar province are reliant on electricity from the Kajaki dam.
