MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): About 15,000 people have been employed with financial support of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in northern Balkh province, an official said on Wednesday.
Mazar-i-sharif mayor Mohammad Kazeem Tariq said the UNOPS had provided temporary job opportunities to about 15,000 people in 12 police districts of the provincial capital.
He said these people worked in construction of roads, canals, bridges and some other development projects.
A road is being constructed in Kart-i-Amani area in the limits of 7th police district.
Mohammad Shafi Sherani, an engineer of this project, said about 300 people were hired in this project and each was paid 450 afghanis wage per day.
Those working on the projects are also happy for being provided with employment opportunities.
Padshah Mir, a worker, said: “I am happy to have been provided with job in my area. On the one hand, I am earning a legitimate income for my family and on the other building my homeland.”
He asked other aid giving institutions to provide people with employment opportunities instead of giving free food.
Khyber, another worker, said he was happy that such projects were being implemented in their province.
Earlier, some organizations had provided job opportunities to hundreds of returnees from Pakistan in the province.
