KABUL (Pajhwok): Russian Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Maria Zakharova has said second meeting of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres with special representatives for Afghanistan of several countries and organizations in Doha failed, according to a media report on Wednesday.
“We are forced to admit that the event, in fact, failed,” Zakharova said according to a report in Tass.
She added: “The delegation of the Afghan government refused to participate due to the humiliating conditions associated with the fact that it was allowed only to minor events with the involvement of fugitive emissaries of the so-called Afghan civilian society. The latter were selected by Westerners without the consent of Kabul and even the UN Security Council. As a sign of solidarity, the Russian side refrained from contacts with them. Some of our partners followed our example.”
In addition, the diplomat noted that during the meeting “no decision was made on the previously announced plans by the UN to create the post of a special envoy of the organization and a “small contact group” for Afghanistan.”
“Unfortunately, such important issues were included on the agenda without proper elaboration. Any initiative – be it the establishment of a new post or format – is doomed to failure without the support of Kabul and regional states,” she emphasized.
A two-day meeting of special representatives for Afghanistan under the auspices of the UN, which took place in the capital of Qatar, ended on Monday.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan delegation refused to participate in the consultations due to the fact that the organizers did not fulfill their conditions.
