MAIMANA (Pajhwok): The recent snow spell has killed over 2,000 cattle, destroyed five houses and blocked major roads linking districts to the capital of northern Faryab province, say local officials.
Mufti Esmatullah Muradi, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the heavy snowfall killed over 2,000 animals in different districts.
Some livestock farmers are still stranded along with their cattle in different areas, according to the official, who said efforts were ongoing to rescue them.
The Prime Minister’s Office had sent 800,000 afs in aid to each affected district, Muradi added.
The Faryab leadership has formed an emergency committee to help the people trapped in the snow in Almar, Qaisar, Chehelgazi, Khwaja Musa, Shirin Tagab, Daulat Abad and Qaramqol districts, and delivered food, fodder, tents and other necessities to the affected people.
Separately, the police headquarters said 1,000 cattle heads were killed in Qaisar, Almar, Pashtunkot, Khwaja Musa, Khwaja Sabzposh, Shirin Tagab, Daulat Abad, Qaramqol, Garziwan and Lolash districts.
The snow also destroyed some houses and blocked major highways linking districts with the capital of Maimana.
The PM Office has also set up an emergency committee to prevent further losses of the livestock and has allocated 400 million afghanis for assistance to the affected individuals.
