Recent snow, cold kill nearly 7,000 animals in Baghlan

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Nearly 7,000 animals have died due to the recent snow spell and cold weather in northern Baghlan province.

Wali Amerkhel, a spokesman for the Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock department, told Pajhwok Afghan News that about 6,993 animals had died mostly sheep and goats in Baghlan-i-Markazi, Dehna Ghori and Tala wa Barfak districts of severe cold and hunger.

He said livestock pastures in the province were covered with snow. He said livestock of some nomads and farmers of Badakhshan, Bamyan and Takhar provinces also got stuck in snow in Baghlan and faced the threat of death.

Amarkhel said their department had started efforts to save animals and had also delivered food to the animals trapped in snow in some areas.

Meanwhile, Fazal Ahmad, a farmer in Baghlan, said his 11 sheep had died so far and the rest starved for the last several days.
