SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): The construction of Qoush Tapa Canal’s second phase has started in the Aqcha, Murdyan and Khanaqa districts of northern Jawzjan province, an official said on Sunday.
According to reports, the Qoush Tapa Canal is 280 metres long, 100 metres wide and 8.5 metres deep, it has the capacity to irrigate 500,000 hectares of land in Balkh, Jawzjan and Faryab provinces.
The Qoush Tapa Canal could carry 10 billion cubic metres of water from Amu River in the Kaldar district of Balkh province to the Andkhoi district of Faryab.
Work on this mega project kicked of last year in March and its first phase was completed in October, 2023 and subsequently its second phase was launched in Balkh. In Jawzjan, the second phase of Qoush Tapa Canal now started in the presence of high-ranking Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan officials.
Mullah Saeed Saleemi, head of the Jawzjan River Zone Authority, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the construction of Qoush Tapa Canal in Jawzjan started.
He said thousands of people would be able to get work opportunity by the launched of the canal’s construction work.
