GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Residents of Gardez city, the capital of southeastern Paktia province, say they are fed up with noise and air pollution being created by factories operational in residential areas.

Moin Shah, a resident of Ariana Pump area in Gardez city, told Pajhwok a gur making factory was operational against the wall of his house.

“The gur making factory is attached to my house. Not only me, but all my neighbors are fed up with the noise.”

He stressed that the government should not allow factories lacking filters to operate.

Another resident of Gardez, Zahirshah, said the activities of manufacturing factories in residential areas had polluted the air and created noise pollution.

“A factory near our houses produces smoke and loud sound. If the factory is not shifted elsewhere, we will have to move elsewhere.”

A number of other people also held similar views and demanded of the government to take serious action in this regard.

Meanwhile, manager of a factory in Gardez city, Fazal Din Jalalzai, told Pajhwok factories were operational in residential areas becaue there was no industrial park.

He said most factories used coal, wood or generators due to lack of electricity, which caused air and noise pollution.

On the other hand, government officials also acknowledge the problems created by the operation of manufacturing factories in residential areas.

Maulvi Abdul Hadi Hidayat, Paktia Environmental Protection head, told Pajhwok that more than half of the factories in Paktia operated in a non-standard manner.

He added efforts were being made to standardize the activities of manufacturing factories.

He said some factories had been able to reduce noise pollution, but they could not install standard filters to prevent air pollution due to economic problems.

Dozens of factories are currently operational in residential areas in Gardez.
