KABUL (Pajhwok): About 19,000 drug addicts were rounded up, 3,941 light and heavy weapons recovered and 3,645 hectares of land cleared of poppy during the past six months across the country, the Ministry of Interior said on Thursday.
MoI spokesperson Mufti Abdul Mateen Qani presented a report about MoI’s six-month activities at the Government Information and Media Center in Kabul today.
Criminal cases
Mufti Qani said 8,747 criminal cases took place during the past six months in Afghanistan and 12,540 suspects arrested in connection with these incidents.
He said 733 crime suspects were at large and 800 other suspects, including 449 security personnel and 337 civilians, had been arrested for various crimes.
Qani said police during operations seized 3,870 light and 71 heavy weapons, 875 landmines, 699 kilograms of explosives, 58,000 rounds of ammunition, 1,177 telecommunications devices and 333 special vehicles, 852 liters of acid, one million and 200,000 smuggled Saudi Riyals and 180,000 fake dollars.
Abductions
The police spokesman said 19 kidnapping cases occurred in the past six months. He said 21 kidnappers were killed and three others were injured in clashes with security forces and 18 people were rescued from their clutches and 172 people were arrested in connection with kidnapping cases.
Weapons
Qani said police recovered 1,322 weapons, 42,000 rounds of light and heavy weapons, 251 hand grenades, 184 landmines, 21 communication devices, 21 binoculars and 324 kilograms of explosives.
Poppy
In the last six months, police conducted 15,549 anti-narcotics operations throughout Afghanistan, arresting 5,663 people and confiscating 1,178 tons of different types of narcotics.
He said eight drugs producing machines and 377 factories were discovered and destroyed and 3645 hectares of land cleared of poppy during the period.
He added 409 cars, 2431 telephones, seven million afghanis, two million Pakistani rupees, 20 million Tomans and more than 10,000 US dollars were seized by police in connection with the drug cases.
According to him, 19,000 drug addicts were collected and sent to medical centers for treatment.
Passport
Qani said 837,000 passports were issued during the past six months.
Airports
Qani said border police arrested 221 suspects at Afghanistan’s airports over various crimes and prevented the smuggling of 1.3 million US dollars, 760,000 euros, 1.4 million Riyals, 20 million Pakistani rupees and 23 kg of gold.
Traffic accidents
During the past six months, according to Qani, 1978 traffic accidents were recorded. As a result, 949 people died and 303 others were injured.
