SAR-I-PUL (Pajhwok): Local officials in northern Sar-i-Pul province say recent floods caused by heavy rains destroyed crops on more than 1,000 hectares of land and washed away 42 water in the province.

Damla Sharifullah Mosadiq, Sar-i-Pul agriculture, irrigation and livestock director, told Pajhwok Afghan News that 1,456 hectares of farmland and gardens had been destroyed in the province by floods last month.

He added: “Unfortunately, the floods caused most of the damages in Kohistanat district and the matter has been shared with the provincial authorities and officials at the center and partner institutions to help the affected people.”

He said under the guidance of governor Mohammad Yaqub Abdul Rahman Aka, a delegation of the Natural Disaster Management Department had been tasked with assessing the damage.

On the other hand, Qari Bahram Omari, Sar-i-Pul River basin head, said that 42 water heads of agricultural lands had been destroyed due to the floods.

Rahmatullah, a resident, said that the floods in recent days destroyed dams, depriving agricultural lands of irrigation water. He feared, if the dams are not rebuilt soon, agriculture would annihilate.

Hassan, another resident, said: “Ee ask the government and institutions to help farmers as soon as possible by reconstructing the dams.”
