KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Eight check dams have been constructed at a cost of more than 18 million afghanis in southeastern Khost province.
The dams have been built with financial support from the Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW). Each dam has the capacity to store 53,300 cubic metres of water and irrigate 350 acres of land, according to officials.
The check dams have been put into service in Nadir Shah Kot, Sabari, Zazi Maidan, Musakhel, Dowa Manda and Bak districts and Khost City.
Acting Energy and Water Minister Mullah Abdul Latif Mansour told the inaugural ceremony MoEW planned to construct such dams by harnessing Afghanistan’s water.
He said: “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) policy is clear. Ours is an agricultural country and the caretaker government is committed to exploiting its water resources.”
Maulvi Abdul Qayyum, head of river basin, told Pajhwok Afghan News construction work on two more check dams was underway in the province.
Last year, the IEA supreme leader had decreed the construction of one check dam in each district of the country.
