3 teen-aged sisters drown in Jalalabad canal

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Three sisters have drowned in a canal in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Tuesday.

Information and Culture Director Sediqullah Qureshi told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident took place in the Surkh Dewal area of the 9th police district of Jalalabad on Monday.

He said the girls, aged between 15 and 18 years, were washing clothes in the canal, in which they drowned.

Quraishi said security forces had reached the area and pulled out the bodies from the water and handed them over to their family.

Ahmadullah, a resident of the area, told Pajhwok that initially one girl fell down in the water and the two others had jumped to rescue her, but as a result all drowned to death.

Residents of Surkh Dewal area always wash their cloths in the canal because of the low level of water.
