Ex-president Karzai’s elder brother dies in US

KABUL (Pajhwok): Ex-president Hamid Karzai’s elder brother Abdul Qayyum Karzai has died in the United States. He was 77.

A great proponent of peace, Abdul Qayyum Karzai was elected as a member of the Wolesi Jirga and contested the 2014 presidential ballot.

Born in 1957 in the Karz village of Kandahar, he took part in the 2001 Bonn Conference and worked actively for peace in the country.

He studied political science and economics in the United States, where he lived and died in the state of Maryland. He is survived by a widow and two children.

In the US, he founded the Helmand Restaurant in Mount Vernon and several other hotels. According to a relative, he died of a heart attack on Thursday at his home in Howard County.

According to the Baltimore Sun, he is survived by his wife Patricia Karzai, daughter Ariana Karzai, son Helmand Karzai; five brothers; a sister and four grandchildren.
