UNSC to meet on Afghanistan in mid-June

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will hold a meeting to review the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on June 14.

Special Representative of the Secretary-General and UNAMA head Roza Otunbayeva and a representative of civil society are expected to brief the meeting, the UNSC said in a statement.

The closed-door consultations are scheduled to be held on June 14 to review the UNAMA mandate.

The powerful 15-member council had held a session on the situation in Afghanistan on February 26 this year.

Earlier, the Islamic Emirate had welcomed the extension of UNAMA’s mandate as a positive step.

Following the Bonn Conference in 2002, UNAMA commenced its operations in Afghanistan based on Security Council Resolution 1401.
