ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Residents of Shingish area in the Shegal district of eastern Kunar province complain about the absence of health and road facilities.

They have to use animals like horses and donkeys to transport patients to the district health clinic from Shingish — a mountainous area 20 kilometres away from Shegal centre.

Its residents say they are deprived of element facilities, including a health centre and a road.

Abdul Rahim, an influential figure, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “More than 10,000 people live in our area, which has many big and small villages. However, we do not have access to health services.”

He lamented Shingish residents could not take their patients to the district health centre on time due to the poor condition of the road.

Haji Kamal, another inhabitant of the remote locality, deplored pregnant women often lost their lives on the way to the district health centre.

He said: “We had constructed a road, linking our area to the district, on the top of mountains at our own cost. But it has now been destroyed, leaving us with no access to health services.”

“Medicines for common diseases are not available in our area. My granddaughter fell from a mountain yesterday and her arm was broken. We had to take her to the district health centre on feet.”

He asked the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) to provide them with health services on a war footing.

On the other hand, Public Health Department officials say they have provided health services in many remote areas of the province. But some localities are still without such facilities.

Public Health Director Qari Muzaffar Mukhlis told Pajhwok they had set up health centres in most areas of the district.

He assured they would provide the residents of Shingish as well with health services. However, he did not provide further details.
