LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Residents of Disho district of southern Helmand province cross the Khanshin river to reach Lashkargah City, the provincial capital, in a small boat because there is no bridge on the river.

Mohammad Isa, a resident of Disho district, told Pajhwok Afghan News they were facing many difficulties due to lack of a direct route to Lashkargah and urged officials to build a bridge on the Khanshin district river.

According to him, currently people cross the river in a small boat.

“The people of Bahramcha and Nimrozo areas also cross this river in the same boat and some times patients have to wait for hours.”

Mohammad Amin, another inhabitant, said no market existed in the entire district and they had to bring needed things from Lashkargah by crossing the river..

“We don’t have a marketplace. We depend on the boat for everything and this is not for granted.”

Qudratullah, a shopkeeper in the district, said he had to sell things at a higher price after paying the boat rent.

Deputy administrative chief for Disho district, Mullah Juma Gul Janan, also requested the central government to build a bridge on the Khanshin river.

He said: “If built this bridge will facilitate the people of Farah, Nimroz and Bahramcha district.”

On the other hand, Helmand governor’s spokesman Maulvi Mohammad Qasim Riaz hoped the problems of Disho residents would be addressed soon.

Disho is situated 250 kilometers south of Helmand and its residents complaint there is not even a single school in the entire district.
