FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): Two check dams costing 13 million afghanis have been built in western Farah province and work on a third launched in southern Zabul province, the Ministry of Rural Development and Rehabilitation said on Thursday.
Farah Rural Development director Mufti Mohammad Nasim Sarhang told Pajhwok Afghan News one of the checks dam was put into service in Takjar area of Bakwa district and its construction took four months.
The 47-meter wide and four-meter high dam has the capacity to store 12,000 cubic meters of water.
“This dam will also raise the underground water level that will benefit the area residents,”: Sarhang explained.
According to him, the dam will prevent flash floods from inundating agricultural lands and dozens of people worked on the project.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Rural Development and Rehabilitation in a statement said the second check dam was completed at the cost of 6.5 million afghanis in Aftina village of Parhman district.
The 38-meter long and four meters high dam has the capacity to store 25,000 cubic meters of water and provided employment to dozens of people.
The ministry also announced starting construction work on a third dam in Spinband village of Jaldak district of Zabul.
The 24-meter long and three-meter high reservoir has the capacity to store 13,200 cubic meters of water.
Separately, in eastern Laghman province, three sub-roads are being constructed in Mehtarlam, the provincial capital.
Laghman governor’s spokesman Abdul Malik Niazi told Pajhwok Afghan News the municipality was constructing the subways at a cost of 6 million afghanis and its construction works would take eight months.
The government has so far constructed many such dams in the country and some are being constructed.
