KABUL (Pajhwok): The death toll from rain-induced flash floods has risen to 59 in India’s northeastern Assam state, a media reports said on Monday.
Business Standard quoted officials of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) as saying: “Six more people lost their lives on Saturday, raising the death toll from 52 to 58. Dhubri is the worst-hit district, followed by Cachar and Darrang.”
Destructive floodwaters resulted in loss of life, extensive damage to infrastructure, road closures, crop destruction and livestock killings. Hundreds of people have been left homeless.
Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several northeastern states, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall.
