UNHCR, Pakistani officials discuss return of Afghan refugees

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Top UN and Pakistani officials have agreed to continue working closely for the provision of necessary assistance to Afghan refugees.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also conferred on implementation of sustainable solutions for the well-resourced, safe and dignified return of Afghan nationals to their homeland.

The meeting comes after Pakistan’s decision to start the second phase of repatriating more than three million documented and undocumented Afghans.

Pakistan again reminded sponsor countries of taking in the Afghan nationals they had assured of resettlement in their lands.

The Foreign Office said Grandi commended Pakistan’s efforts and contributions in hosting millions of Afghan refugees for decades and termed it a remarkable example of the country’s hospitality.

“He briefed the deputy prime minister on UNHCR’s ongoing projects and emphasised on the importance of sustained engagement and cooperation between Pakistan and the UNHCR.”

Dar stressed new humanitarian situations emerging around the globe must not divert international attention from the needs of millions of Afghans.

“The deputy prime minister also underlined the need for continued demonstration of international solidarity and faithful adherence to the principle of international responsibility and burden-sharing.”
