KABUL (Pajhwok): Twenty months into his ill-starred term, Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has lost a parliamentary trust vote, says a media report.
The landlocked South Asian country, bordering China and India, is set for a new coalition government led by KP Sharma Oli.
Reuters reported Dahal was compelled to stand down or prove his majority in parliament after the Communist Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) party, led by Oli, parted ways with the prime minister.
Having served as prime minister twice before, the UML chief sealed a deal with the Nepali Congress (NC) last month, securing enough seats for a majority.
Dahal needed 138 votes in his favour in the 275-member house to stay in power, the report said. Sixty-three of the 258 legislators present voted for him, 194 voted against, and one abstained.
After the ballot count, Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire announced: “The confidence vote sought by Dahal has been rejected.”
Since becoming prime minister in December 2022, Dahal had to seek a vote of confidence in parliament five times due to squabbles within coalition partners.
